A Carved Gothic Altar from Rugo Stone

Beauty, quality and detailing remain possible in our own times and this can be seen quite well in a marble altar that was created for Corpus Christi Church in South Riding, Virginia by Rugo Stone in collaboration with a larger projects by McCrery Architects. From Rugo Stone:

The Corpus Christi Altar of Sacrifice, manufactured at Rugo Stone, features custom molded profiling and hand-carved tracery work inspired by the parish’s neo-gothic architecture. We were honored to create this original Altar of Sacrifice for the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, this highly unique altar utilized all of our team’s varied skills, from machining specialists, master stone carvers, and our expert mosaic artists... Marble specifically sourced for its vein patterns and vivid background color is inlaid with Rosso Francia, Fior di Pesco, Grigio Carnico, and accents of Portoro, to create a stately piece, designed for decades of elegant performance... Rugo’s in-house experts’ skill is reflected in the mosaic detailing which is mounted on honeycomb panels. Serpentine and radial tracery profiles were achieved using our ... machining ability combined with hours of hand carving and hand honing...

One can see how well this particular design meshes with the hsitorical high altar found behind in both its use of colour and in its detailing. One could well imagine that this particular work was designed at the same time and by the same workshop.

A view from the side of the altar shows its classic gothic tracery in the form of crosses:

This view and those below reveal the beautiful reddish-brown marble detailing found throughout the design -- which, again, help to connect it with the high altar found behind:

This particular altar is so finely executed that it could be easily mistook for one of the original historical altars and is a testimony to the fact that nobility, beauty and craftsmanship are not, as they are sometimes assumed, "things of the past."
