Details of A.W.N. Pugin's Chapel for the Earls of Shrewsbury

The following shows the design for the high altar and other parts of St. Peter's Chapel, Alton Towers, Staffordshire, by A.W.N. Pugin. This was the family chapel of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the interior being designed by Pugin in the mid 19th century.  Unfortunately the chapel fell into disuse by 1924 and was stripped of most of its decorative features by the early 1950's. These drawings that were made of the chapel, however, at very least give one a sense of the chapel as it would have been

We begin with the high altar.


The high altar always gets a great deal of attention in churches like these, and so we are fortunate that it was preserved in tact, now residing at St. Peter's Church, Bromsgrove. Here it is:
