Metalcraft from the Philippines

It is always impressive to see on display the metal craft creations that are made in the Philippines. This traditional artisanal craft has been preserved in few places and takes the right tools and training. The creations include a variety of items, such as statues and their accessories, haloes, and even clothing.

Other creations include crosses, rosaries, frames, ex votos, crowns, stands, tiaras, reliquaries, and so much more. The attention to detail is impressive and the items are generally quite small. It is very difficult to find craftsmen who can still offer these services today at a reasonable price.

Liturgical art such as these creations reflect the spiritual reality that beauty is God's messenger. A pattern like those seen in this images with their attention to detail tells us something unforgettable about God. Sacred liturgy does not flee from the role of honoring God and reflecting His greatness through beauty, inspiring the faithful to worship God in a perfect way.

Now that the cancer phase of the 1960s is over, we see a return to beauty in the liturgical arts. Classical arts - such as metal works in gold and silver - open a way to eternity, a glimpse of the glory that is to come in Heaven. The only thing that makes sense for those who worship at the altar is this kind of beauty, transporting the beholder into a different dimension where we offer what is best to God.

The images here illustrate creations by the studio of the master artist Dodong Azares of Dodong's Religious Metal Craft, located in Caybiga, Caloocan, Philippines. Since 1988 they have been producing works of great beauty and merit as well as offering repair and enhancement work services.
