At Solemn Pontifical Masses for Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church there is a tradition of the caudatari, or "carrier of the strascico (portatore dello strascico), holding the dragging edge of the cappa magana of the prelate.
The person in this role generally is the last one in the procession. They must be noble in ambition and strong and tall enough to hold the train of the cappa magana straight so that it does not drag on the ground and become soiled with dust from foot traffic in a church.
A very practical role, especially if the pre Pius XII train is used that is extra long. Seen in the photos here is a young cleric who wear paonzza with a type of matching soprana to delineate his dignity and separate role in the service.
