Folded Chasuble of the Barberini Pope, Urban VIII

There are times when there are a collision of elements that are irresistible. Include within that the following example of a folded chasuble (planeta plicata) in the "cut" form that comes the era of Pope Urban VIII, the Barberini pope with the famed heraldic bees of the same family, published recently in the excellent book,  Il Papa e le sue vesti. That book incidentally, is well worth purchasing, even if you do not speak Italian, including any number of treasures from the papal sacristy.

Here is a slightly larger view of both. This particular brocade is mainly known through the red vestments of Urban VIII that are preserved in S. Maria Maggiore in Rome.
